WHAT WAS JMOFEST????

In 2009 my husband Dan and I attended a Pink Ribbon Charity Ball to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Dan had one or two wines, got slightly overexcited during the charity auction and bought a full-colour page in the popular Daily Telegraph newspaper – which he thought was a bargain at the time… I said to Dan – “Yes it would be a bargain – if we actually had something to advertise.”. The cash all went to breast cancer so that was great, but what on earth to do with the page? We thought long and hard and had a brainwave – what better gift to the wonderful people of the world than a full-size cut-out-and-wear Lady Julia Morris mask? From there it was just one, giant, silly, egomaniacal step to JMoFest…

We asked people to make short films (under 3 minutes) or still images featuring the mask and decided that the festival would raise money for the NBCF as well. Then Gary Pitts who owns the Camera House in Castle Hill and the Camera Centre in Westfield Miranda teamed up with Canon to donate some incredible Canon prizes.

The response was truly overwhelming and between September and November 2010 we received nearly 200 entries – from Broome to Edinburgh and from young and old(er) alike. The amount of effort that people went to was quite staggering and entries included everything from dung beetles to boat people, sent me back in time, into the future and everywhere in between. The “Laughs For Hooters” fundraiser finals raised over $10,000 for the NBCF and it was all so much fun that we decided to do JMoFest all over again in 2011 – raising another $12,000.
